Manual handling is the main cause of injury at work. It is reported to be over one-third of the incident happen in the hospitality sector.  Manual handling can cause problems which lead to debilitating long-term illnesses and cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. People who suffered can be forced to leave their jobs in severe cases or unable to work at all. Therefore, employees should be consulted to take protective measures related to manual handling of work through training and knowledge on new mechanical aids to handle heavy loads. This is to reduce the number of incident happen to each of our staff.

AVOID MANUAL HANDLING

-Whenever possible, avoid handling heavy loads by yourself

-Try to find fit/castors or wheels equipment so that item can be wheeled, instead of being lifted

-Be Aware of where mechanical aids are

-Think before you execute

USE TROLLEY PROVIDED

-Use trolley when carrying heavy items like chairs or tables

-Ensure trolley are in good conditions

-Ensure the trolley is suitable for the required task

KEEP WALKWAYS CLEAR

-Avoid tripping hazards

-Look out for steps and trailing cables

-Never store item in walkway

-Consider assessing walkway before handling load

ASSESS BEFORE HANDLING

-Always check and access the whether the item is too heavy to take

-Check whether it is hot or cold

-Check whether it is stable or unstable

-Check whether there are any sharp edges on the item

ASK FOR HELP

-Do not afraid to ask for assistance if need

-Agree the method/technique of lifting with one another before carrying

-Ask people to hold door for you if possible

BREAK UP LARGE LOAD

-Try to handle smaller load if possible

-Make several trips if needed

– Organised your actual time needed to complete your task
